University of Pisa

The University of Pisa is an Italian public research university located in Pisa, Italy. It was founded in 1343.

The University of Pisa is a public institution with twenty departments, and high-level research centers in the agriculture, astrophysics, computer science, engineering, medicine, and veterinary medicine sectors.

Our collaboration with the University of Pisa stretches over many years. Considering that four of the Zerynth founders graduated from this university, and the fact that two are working there today, we could say that the collaboration started at the same time Zerynth was founded.

Over the years, we’ve held many workshops and courses for the students of the University of Pisa. The last one being at the end of 2019, where we taught the students how simple Python programming is with Zerynth tools.
The title of the event was “From “Hello World” to professional IoT applications with Zerynth“. As you can see from the title, we tried to cover everything from simple Hello World examples to building IoT applications. Appropriately, the event took place at the Computer Science department.

We’ve also held a SPRINT 4.0 course, at the University of Pisa, in September 2019. During the five days of the course, with the help of our team, the students learned how to build Industry 4.0 and IoT applications. As the main tool, we used the Zerynth-powered 4ZeroPlatform – a plug-and-play data gathering, processing, and reporting solution that provides visibility and optimization of Industrial Processes.

And it’s not just the workshops, we’ve also developed some innovative projects together. Back in 2016, we joined forces and covered the whole city of Pisa with LPWAN – a (Low Power Wide Area Network), a low power, long-range, and low bandwidth networking solution that’s ideal for smart cities.

The network infrastructure is provided by The Things Network, a global community of people over 84 countries building a global Internet of Things data network.

The collaboration goes even deeper with our intern program, where we welcome students from the University of Pisa to Zerynth, and give them an opportunity to see how a modern IoT company operates, to meet new people, and to try out everything they have learned at the univerity with real-world projects.

Two of our interns recently finished and published their thesis at the University of Pisa, using Zerynth tools.

The two projects were:

  • Nybro: a Smart Assistant for Integrated Urban Mobility – an IoT solution that obtains online information on services related to mobility and provides a summary of the situation in the city to the user, and the best means of transport to use at that time of the day.
  • Business Analytics Solution for an IoT Development Framework – describes the whole process of designing and implementing a brand new business analytic solution for the Zerynth IoT development framework.
